In short: To receive the German nursing licence you need the German language skills required for the profession – in practice the federal states generally ask for level B2, and many require a nursing-specific language exam (Fachsprachprüfung). For entry through the recognition partnership (§ 16d (3) Residence Act), German at A2 is usually enough. Rules differ between the federal states, so always check with your competent authority.

Levels at a glance
- A2: usually the minimum for entry via the recognition partnership (§ 16d (3)).
- B1: often expected for nursing training (Ausbildung) and useful for adaptation courses.
- B2: generally required for the professional licence; some states require a nursing-specific exam at B2 level.
Accepted certificates
Commonly accepted general certificates come from providers such as Goethe-Institut, telc, ÖSD and TestDaF, but each authority decides which certificates it accepts. Nursing-specific exams (for example "telc Deutsch B1-B2 Pflege" or exams organised by state nursing chambers or authorities) are required in some states. Ask the authority handling your recognition before you book an exam.
Learning German in Germany
Once in Germany, you can attend the BAMF job-related language courses (Berufssprachkurse), which include courses for healthcare professions. See our guide on the BAMF course.
Realistic time planning
Reaching B2 from zero typically takes many months of intensive study. Start early – language is the most common reason for delays.
