Nursing assistant training (Pflegefachassistenz) from 2027

In short: From 1 January 2027 there is a nationwide training as nursing assistant (Pflegefachassistenz). Full-time it usually takes 18 months (part-time up to 36 months) and replaces the previous 27 different state-level nursing assistant trainings. The legal basis is the Nursing Assistant Act (PflFAssG) of 28 October 2025.

Note: This page provides general information and is not legal advice. The law and the decisions of the competent authorities are decisive; rules can change. As of October 2026.

What is it?

An independent professional profile below the three-year nursing training, generalist in orientation; according to the Federal Family Ministry it includes compulsory placements in inpatient long-term care, outpatient long-term care and inpatient acute care. The training is paid.

What it means for international staff

According to the Federal Family Ministry, the new law should also make recognition of foreign qualifications easier – one nationwide profile instead of 27 reference standards. How individual foreign qualifications are assessed is still decided case by case by the competent body. For nurses with a bachelor's degree or diploma, the goal usually remains full recognition as Pflegefachfrau/Pflegefachmann.

What employers should note

  • According to the Federal Health Ministry, financing for a 2027 training start must begin in 2026.
  • A nationwide assistant qualification makes deployment across state borders easier.
  • Clarify early whether a candidate has a nursing or an assistant qualification – it determines the recognition route.
