In short: Since 2020 Germany trains registered nurses in a generalist programme (Pflegefachfrau/Pflegefachmann) under the Nursing Professions Act. Separate qualifications in geriatric care (Altenpflege) and paediatric nursing still exist as specialisations. Nursing assistants form a separate, shorter qualification that will be regulated nationwide from 2027. Each regulated title needs a state licence.

Registered nurse (Pflegefachfrau / Pflegefachmann)
The main route for qualified nurses from abroad. Your qualification is compared with the generalist German training; afterwards you may use the protected title and work in hospitals, care homes and home care.
Geriatric care and paediatric nursing
The Nursing Professions Act still allows the specialised titles "Altenpflegerin/Altenpfleger" and "Gesundheits- und Kinderkrankenpflegerin/-pfleger". Many international nurses work in elderly care, often with the generalist licence.
Nursing assistant (Pflegefachassistenz)
From 2027 a nationwide nursing assistant training replaces different state rules. It can be an entry route for people whose qualification is not (yet) equivalent to a registered nurse. See our guide on nursing assistant training.
Which route fits you?
- Completed nursing degree or diploma → recognition as registered nurse.
- No nursing qualification yet → nursing training (Ausbildung) in Germany.
- Shorter care qualification → check recognition as nursing assistant with the competent authority.
